Do you run your business like a marathon runner? You get up in the morning, you just go go go and then crash at the end of the day and your to-do list is just as long as it was at the start. You know there is a better way. You need to stop, just breathe and let go of the stress.
There's probably three key things that a successful marathon runner does. The first one is that they have a plan and it's prepared well before race day. They have a strategy on the race and we need to be the same in our business. We need to have a good plan of strategy to make sure that our days a success. There's actually four cycles to a business. They start off with a launch, then moves into the growth and then up to the maturity and into the decline. You really need to understand at what stage your business is at and have a plan accordingly. The second thing they do is when you're in a race, if they got a hill to climb for example they have a burst to energy and then they ease back and relook at things and see how they're going and they might reassess that plan and we need to do the same in our business. We need to be adaptable and we need to be open to opportunities. If you're just work work work all day you're going to miss a lot of those opportunities that you need. The third thing is that they have the right equipment and a good support team. How would they be if they had old running shoes and they're running their marathon? It's the same with our business. If we've got pieces of equipment that aren't working properly how much time are we going to waste just actually being inefficient with that equipment and without the support team if you're on your own and you're there working all day, again you're missing opportunities. You need to be either outsourcing and marketing for example or maybe bringing a bookkeeper in. We can't do everything on our own.
So if we want a successful business like that successful marathon runner, we need to have a plan well in advance. We need to make sure we have the right equipment and a good support team and during the day we need to have bursts of energy but we also then need to ease back and reassess and make sure that we have the flexibility.
So if you can just implement one of these in your day, imagine how much better it's going to be. So which one are you going to implement?
